Bhai Makhan Shah Lubana was a respected Sikh merchant, sailor, and devoted follower of Guru Tegh Bahadur. He is best known for identifying Guru Tegh Bahadur as the true Ninth Guru after the passing of Guru Har Krishan.

According to Sikh tradition, while at sea, Makhan Shah Lubana’s ship was caught in a violent storm. He prayed that if his life and cargo were saved, he would offer 500 gold coins (mohars) to the true Guru. After reaching safety, he learned that many people were claiming to be the next Guru.

To find the true Guru, he visited each claimant and offered only 2 gold coins. Most accepted the small offering. When he finally met Guru Tegh Bahadur at Baba Bakala, the Guru asked him why he had forgotten the promise of 500 gold coins. Realizing he had found the true Guru, Makhan Shah Lubana joyfully climbed to the rooftop and shouted:

“Guru Ladho Re! Guru Ladho Re!”
(“I have found the Guru! I have found the Guru!”)

This announcement helped the Sikh community recognize Guru Tegh Bahadur as the rightful Ninth Guru. Bhai Makhan Shah Lubana is remembered for his unwavering faith, honesty, and courage. His story remains an important example of devotion, truth, and selfless service in Sikh history.
